Standards & compliance

Every standard, in plain words.

LPG valves are among the most regulated parts on a cylinder. Here is what each standard actually covers, what it means for you, and which Orson valves meet it.

EN 13953
01
Pressure relief valves
European standard for pressure relief valves on refillable LPG cylinders: when the valve must open, how much gas it must discharge, and when it must close again.
What it means for you
If cylinder pressure ever climbs too high — in a fire or in extreme heat — the relief valve vents safely instead of the cylinder failing.
→ Every Orson valve with a PRV — compact, hand-wheel and jumbo.
EN 15202
02
Outlet connection dimensions
Sets the essential dimensions of LPG cylinder valve outlets and the regulators and equipment that connect to them.
What it means for you
Your regulator fits first time, every time — and the wrong regulator cannot be connected by mistake.
→ All compact, hand-wheel, jumbo and camping valves.
EN ISO 14245 · 15995
03
Self-closing & hand-wheel valves
International specifications and type tests for LPG cylinder valves: self-closing (14245) and manually operated (15995).
What it means for you
The design has been proven against leakage, endurance, impact and temperature before it ever reaches a cylinder.
→ Compact (self-closing) and hand-wheel families.
UL 1769
04
Cylinder valves — USA & Canada
Underwriters Laboratories standard for LPG cylinder valves, including overfilling prevention devices (OPD).
What it means for you
Required for 20, 30 and 40 lb cylinders in North America. OPD stops filling at about 80% so there is always room for the gas to expand.
→ OPD valve and LCC 27 valve (UL Listed).
TPED · π
05
Transportable pressure equipment — EU
The EU Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive (2010/35/EU). A π mark shows the valve has been assessed by an independent notified body. (Not to be confused with PED, which covers fixed pressure equipment.)
What it means for you
π-marked valves can be fitted to cylinders that are filled, transported and used anywhere in the EU.
→ π-marked compact, hand-wheel and jumbo valves.
ρ mark
06
United Kingdom
The UK marking for transportable pressure equipment, used in place of π for the British market.
What it means for you
Valves can be placed on cylinders sold and refilled in the UK.
→ ρ-marked approved products.
EN 12164 · 12165
07
Brass for valve bodies
European standards for copper-alloy rod and forging stock — chemical composition and mechanical properties.
What it means for you
Every lot of brass is checked on our in-house spectrometer before it enters production, so the body is exactly the alloy it should be.
→ All brass valve bodies.
EN 549
08
Rubber seals
Requirements for rubber materials used in gas equipment — resistance to LPG, ozone and ageing, and hardness.
What it means for you
Seals stay tight and flexible for years. Ours are tested in-house for n-pentane, ozone and hardness.
→ Every Orson valve.
REACH
09
Chemicals in products — EU
EU regulation that controls substances of very high concern in materials and products.
What it means for you
Safe to import and sell in the EU, with no restricted substances above the permitted limits.
→ All Orson products.
Plain-language summaries for guidance. The published standard is always the reference. Ask us for the certificate or test report for any valve.
